MINUTES
Planning Commission
March 10, 1988
Thunder
Bay Park
(Cont.)
Costa asked if the trails would be open in the winter.
Sanders reported that the Park Commission is receiving requests for
this and is currently considering it.
DeLonais asked how large a park system the City can support. DeLonais
asked if any estimates have been made on the cost of park maintenance
for the park property the City is acquiring.
Sanders did not know, but agreed that the cost of park maintenance
should be looked into. However, Sanders pointed out that the amount
of park land the City is thinking about acquiring is not out -of -line
with the amount of parks that other cities have.
Costa asked how much acreage in the City is park land.
Sanders replied that total acreage of parks proposed for the City
is approximately 200 acres. This includes Water Works property.
Costa asked the amount of land in Little Canada.
The City Clerk replied that total acreage is approximately 2,800
acres, however, this includes the City as a whole including freeway
system. Gervais Lake alone covers approximately 280 acres.
Sanders reported that he will report back to the Commission on the
exact amount of acreage in the City presently in parks or proposed
to be.
Sanders also reported that the Park Commission would begin some
overall planning and look at population figures as well as future
maintenance costs of the City's park system.
Costa asked the source of funding of the Park Budget.
Sanders reported that the operating budget for the park system
comes from the City's funds. Money collected from park dedication
fees is being set aside for park acquisition.
Costa felt that the Park Commission had to look at maintenance costs
of the City's park system. Costa felt that the Thunder Bay Park as
proposed made a lot of sense and would benefit the residents of the
area. However, Costa did not feel development of the Centerville
Road area with ballfields would benefit the citizens of Little Canada
such as the Thunder Bay Park would.
Herkenhoff asked the effect of locating a park under the power lines.
Sanders reported that the Park Commission has researched this issue
and has determined that there would be no greater effect to people
under the power lines than there would be from being near small
household applicances. Sanders pointed out that the City would be
Page 4
