League of Minnesota Cities
April 18, 1988
Dear city official:
183 University Ave. East
St. Paul, MN 55101.2526
(612) 227.5600 (FAX: 221.0986)
Enclosed are the promotional items for Cities Week. The packet
includes the governor's proclamation of Cities Week, buttons,
posters, a certificate of appreciation, and a sample press release.
A few suggestions: have your mayor read the governor's
proclamation; write your own city proclamation of Cities Week
(use the governor's as a sample); copy the certificates and use
them to recognize city employees and volunteers; write your own
press release (use the enclosed release as a sample) and
emphasize the "local angle."
Add to the sample press release other activities your city has
planned for Cities Week. Make the date, time, and place of the
event clear. You should re -type the release on city stationery.
Add quotes from your mayor, city council members, or the chairman
of the Cities Week Committee to give the press release that local
angle.
If you need a few extra posters and buttons, we do have a limited
supply available.
If we can be of any assistance, please contact Jean Goad or Deb
Nyberg at the League.
OTHER HINTS:
*Have a contact person available for press. Contact person
should arrange any interviews or photos for media.
*Localize the press release.
*Schedule an appointment with the appropriate person at the
newspaper, radio station, or television station to present the news
release and discuss coverage of the Cities Week events along with
publicity before the week.
*Have a good time.
Page 84
