Kellogg Blvd.
St. Paul, MN 55101
March 10, 1989
Dear Mr. Sanders and Councilors:
13
In our March 9 phone conversation, you requested an overview
of the AScI wetlands project.
Our organization, in cooperation with the U.S. Environmental
Protection Agency laboratory based in Duluth and the Natural
Resources Research Institute of UM- Duluth is conducting a
wetlands water quality study. We are focusing on the seven
county metro area and Wright Co. The purpose of our study is to
determine the effects of different types of disturbances, such as
draining, filling, stormwater inputs, wastewater inputs, and
erosion on the water quality and "health" of downstream wetlands.
This work is part of a national program assessing the "health" of
the nation's wetlands. The information obtained from individual
wetland sites will not be analyzed singly, but will be integrated
with data from many other similar wetlands being subjected to the
same type of disturbance.
Our research plan calls for us to identify wetlands at which
permits are in effect or being obtained for some type of activity
that may impact the wetland. We are seeking sites that represent
a range of wetland types including marsh, wooded, steamside, lake
fringe, and wet meadow. We sample these sites prior to the
disturbance and several times during and after the disturbance
takes place. Sampling takes approximately an hour every other
month and involves collecting a surface water sample and taking
simple chemical, hydrologic and biologic measurements.
We did some preliminary sampling at many sites last fall and
will continue water and sediment sampling as soon as open water
is available this spring. At present, we are working on about 35
sites.
We request permission to sample the wetland (Ramsey -
Washington Metro Watershed District wetland GL39) immediately to
the east of the proposed Centerville Road Park in Little Canada,
and to sample Ramsey Co. ditch 16 north of the park area.
