Sathe & Associates, Inc <br />EXECUTIVE SEARCH CONSULTANTS <br />CITY OF LITTLE CANADA <br />City Administrator /Clerk <br />Position Profile <br />The Community <br />Little Canada, in Ramsey County, is centrally located on the northeast hub of the <br />Metropolitan Freeway system. The two interstate highways that service Little <br />Canada are 35E and 694. The City has 15.3 miles of county roads and 16.8 miles <br />of city streets. Little Canada is only minutes from the State Capitol, downtown <br />St. Paul, and fifteen minutes to downtown Minneapolis. Little Canada <br />encompasses an area of 4.34 square miles with a total of 2,777.6 acres. <br />The first settlers in Little Canada were the French Canadians. Benjamin Gervais <br />was the first white man to claim land here in 1844. He established the first grist <br />mill in Minnesota that was not owned by the government. In 1849 the census <br />recorded 322 residents. In 1850 the first school was established with instruction <br />in French. The Catholic Church of St. John the Evangelist was built in 1852. It <br />is now one of Ramsey County's historical sites. St. John's cemetery was the <br />second to be established in the State of Minnesota. <br />The Federal census of 1980 shows the population as 7,082; in 1985 8,010. The <br />1989 estimated population is 9,100. Of the 3,974 total dwelling units, 1,678 are <br />single family, 1,830 are multi - family and 467 are in mobile home parks. In 1988 <br />the City issued 70 permits for new single family construction and anticipates an <br />additional 60 permits in 1989. Currently the City Council has taken a policy <br />position prohibiting additional multi - family units. <br />Education /Cultural Amenities <br />Most of Little Canada is in the Roseville School District No. 623. A small portion <br />is in the White Bear School District No. 624. Little Canada is also part of the <br />District No. 916 area Vo -Tech Institute. Schools in Little Canada include Kellogg <br />Senior High School, Capitol View Middle School, Little Canada Elementary School <br />and St. John's Parochial School. <br />The three Churches located in Little Canada are St. John's Evangelist Catholic <br />Church, Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and Lake Vadnais Evangelical <br />Free Church. Some of the Community Organizations in the City include the Little <br />Canada Recreation Association, the 55 -plus Club, the Historical Society, the Lake <br />Gervais Association, the Canadian Days Association, the League of Women Voters, <br />the Snowmobile Club, and the Little Canada /Vadnais Heights Chamber of <br />Commerce.
