Sathe & Associates, Inc EXECUTIVE SEARCH CONSULTANTS CITY OF LITTLE CANADA City Administrator /Clerk Position Profile The Community Little Canada, in Ramsey County, is centrally located on the northeast hub of the Metropolitan Freeway system. The two interstate highways that service Little Canada are 35E and 694. The City has 15.3 miles of county roads and 16.8 miles of city streets. Little Canada is only minutes from the State Capitol, downtown St. Paul, and fifteen minutes to downtown Minneapolis. Little Canada encompasses an area of 4.34 square miles with a total of 2,777.6 acres. The first settlers in Little Canada were the French Canadians. Benjamin Gervais was the first white man to claim land here in 1844. He established the first grist mill in Minnesota that was not owned by the government. In 1849 the census recorded 322 residents. In 1850 the first school was established with instruction in French. The Catholic Church of St. John the Evangelist was built in 1852. It is now one of Ramsey County's historical sites. St. John's cemetery was the second to be established in the State of Minnesota. The Federal census of 1980 shows the population as 7,082; in 1985 8,010. The 1989 estimated population is 9,100. Of the 3,974 total dwelling units, 1,678 are single family, 1,830 are multi - family and 467 are in mobile home parks. In 1988 the City issued 70 permits for new single family construction and anticipates an additional 60 permits in 1989. Currently the City Council has taken a policy position prohibiting additional multi - family units. Education /Cultural Amenities Most of Little Canada is in the Roseville School District No. 623. A small portion is in the White Bear School District No. 624. Little Canada is also part of the District No. 916 area Vo -Tech Institute. Schools in Little Canada include Kellogg Senior High School, Capitol View Middle School, Little Canada Elementary School and St. John's Parochial School. The three Churches located in Little Canada are St. John's Evangelist Catholic Church, Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and Lake Vadnais Evangelical Free Church. Some of the Community Organizations in the City include the Little Canada Recreation Association, the 55 -plus Club, the Historical Society, the Lake Gervais Association, the Canadian Days Association, the League of Women Voters, the Snowmobile Club, and the Little Canada /Vadnais Heights Chamber of Commerce. Recreational areas include: Spooner Park and Gervais Lake Beach. The Little Canada Canadian Days' Celebration is held annually at Spooner Park. This includes a delegation of guests from Little Canada's Sister City, Thunder Bay.
