MINUTES
PLANNING COMMISSION
April 5, 1990
SIGN
ORDINANCE
FREE - STANDING
SIGNS
Motion seconded by Herkenhoff.
Motion carried 7 - 0.
DeLonais reported that with regard to the issue of
free - standing signs for shopping centers having
multiple buildings, he has looked at other shopping
centers with multiple buildings and finds that these
centers have either one or two free - standing signs.
DeLonais stated that he believes the City should allow
only one pylon per shopping center, and he opposed a
third pylon for the Rice At C Center.
Drabik pointed out the signage that Food & Fuel has at
the Center with their name on the front of the building
as well as the canopy. Drabik felt the signage was
excessive. Drabik asked if the rental advertising sign
on the site was permitted.
The City Planner reported that this sign was permitted
as long as there is space available for rent in the
center.
The City Planner reported that in other areas of the
Metro area, shopping centers with national chains, etc.
have only one sign identifying the shopping center, and
not a directory listing.
Bendel agreed with DeLonais and did not feel there
should be a pylon every 30 feet along Rice Street.
DeLonais pointed out that there are businesses on Rice
Street with more than one pylon, however, this
situation will be upgraded some day.
Bendel suggested that the ordinance provide for a pylon
for every so many feet of frontage.
The Planner pointed out that the City cannot go back
and tell Rice At C that they can have only one pylon at
this point, therefore, two would be allowed.
DeLonais recommended that the City's existing Sign
Ordinance not be amended to address the issue of
free - standing signs for shopping centers having
multiple buildings.
Motion seconded by Pedersen.
Motion carried 7 - 0.
Page 21
