MINUTES PLANNING COMMISSION February 8, 1990 The Planner replied that the predominant sign must be for the Rice at C Center, otherwise it would not be interpreted as a shopping center identification sign. Boosalis pointed out that if the Rice at C Center ID is included on the sign, the other retailers in the center will ask why their names are not included as well. Costa suggested that the other retailers be put on the first sign. Boosalis replied that that sign is full. DeLonais recommended that the Rice at C Center be limited to one pylon sign. Motion seconded by Herkenhoff. Motion denied 2 - 5. DeLonais and Herkenhoff voted in favor and Drabik, Pedersen, Bendel, Garske, and Costa voted against. Townsley reminded the Planning Commission that the property had been zoned Residential and abutts Residential property. Townsley felt that he should not have to put up with the glow of signs into his property, and pointed out that additional pylons will add to this problem. Townsley stated that when he purchased his property five years ago, the surrounding area was residential and now that has been changed. Townsley felt that the residents of the area have had to give up alot, and nothing is being given up by the developer. Costa asked why the second pylon could not be used by Rapid Oil rather than a second identification sign. The Planner suggested that if that is the way the City wants to go, then the Ordinance should be changed allowing this rather than granting a variance. DeLonais stated that if the Ordinance is changed, then every business in a shopping center would request a separate pylon. The Planner suggested that this could be controlled by only allowing separate pylons for free - standing buildings within a shopping center.
