We have
used the basement of the fire hall for many different purposes
throughout the years, and the fire dept. has always offered it to
us free of charge, We currently use the hall throughout the year
for the following purposes:
MEETINGS - Our bimonthly meetings are held the first Wednesday of
every other month beginning in January. We currently have about
60 members. Because of the volunteer nature of our organization,
we do have food and refreshments at our meetings. The layout and
privacy of the building is ideal for this(attatched kitchen area,
tile floor, etc.). We could perhaps move our meetings to the new
fire hall if it can accomodate 60 people. The public nature of
the city hall and lack of kitchen equipment would render it inap-
propriate for this use.
SOFTBALL ON ICE FUNDRAISER - This is consistently one of our
largest fundraising activities and is held annually in January.
The tournament is played at Lake Gervais, and the fire hall is
used as a concessions building. Because of the kitchen facilities
and dining area required, the new station or city hall could not
be substituted. If the old fire hall were not available, we would
be forced to rent a facility. But I believe the rental costs
would proably consume a substantial portion of the money we raise,
rendering the fundraiser impractical. If this fundraiser were
eliminated, it would seriously effect the degree to which we are
currently able to supplement the City's recreation budget.
CHILDRENS' SKATING PARTY - In February of each year, we sponsor a
skating party for all children in Little Canada. We serve food
and pop and have games for the kids. The pi7ximity of the current
hall to the skating rink is ideal for this. The existing warming
house (as well as the new warming house proposed for Roseville
Area Middle School rink) is not large enough for the hundreds of
Page 1
