Joel Hanson
October 8, 1990
Page 2
5. The skating rink gets water for flooding from the
Fire Department building. Regular use of the
fire hydrant on Little Canada Road would require
a longer hose layout each time and would cause
undermining of the ground under the hydrant.
6. The skating rink has had use of the garage area
at the Fire Station for repair of tractors and
snow removal equipment which cannot be done in
the warming house. This garage could also be
very beneficial to the Public Works Department
for any storage or repair needs in this area of
the City.
7. As you know, the City Parks and Recreation
Department would be hard pressed to function as
well as it does without the help and cooperation
of the Little Canada Recreation Association. I
feel that the uses they have for the old Fire
Hall are of the greatest importance to this
Department and to the City in general. Their
various fund - raisers and other events, such as
the children's skating party, need this building
to continue.
The main problem I see for private use of this building is
with parking. Even with the room behind this Fire Station,
(which the Recreation Department badly needs for use of the
skating rink and which I would strongly encourage the City
to keep for that purpose, if the building were sold), there
is very little parking available. However, for public use,
the adjacent City parking lot in front of the Credit Union
makes that use possible.
Lastly, from the discussion by members of the City Council,
when it was decided to discontinue use of this building as
a Fire Department, it was my impression that the City was
in favor of retaining it for City use. Therefore, no areas
were planned for in either the new Fire Station nor the
City Hall addition to accommodate these many existing
activities and uses.
JM:kv
Page 5
