Recycling Update
November 26, 1990
Page 2
3. The City has a chance to get up to $28,800 in
grant money for public education and expanding its
recycling programs. The guidelines for the
expansion grant eligible expenses are for
administration, promotion, purchase or lease of
equipment used for collection and transportation
of recycling materials, or expansion of the
collection of recyclable materials which will
increase the level of recycling beyond the level
achieved in 1990 which includes increasing the
frequency of collection or increasing the types of
materials collected. This money could be used to
help offset some of the charges for recycling in
multi - family units and single family homes such as
picking an address and if that person is recycling
that week, we could reimburse the haulers for one
year out of the grant money to cover the cost of
recycling for that home.
4. We surveyed 35 units. Twenty -six units
responded. Out of the 26, 15 units do some sort
of recycling at this time, ten do not recycle and
one unit submitted back an empty sheet. Of the
units that are recycling, BFI picks up at three,
Super Cycle picks up at one and 11 do their own
type of recycling such as the owners will recycle
the goods themselves or they take them to the City
garage at the drop off site. One of the concerns
in this area is that some of them would prefer to
keep their present hauler for recycling pickup. I
believe it would be in their best interest that
they bargain with their haulers to get a better
rate for recycling and also lowering the cost of
their trash pickup.
5. I have discussed with the haulers the fees for
pickup at residential units. They agreed to pick
up all tri- plexes and four - plexes. They would
still keep the same curb service and all would be
billed at a $1.95 per month per unit the same as
single family homes and duplexes. While they were
not willing to decrease their rates, they were
willing to pick up once a week on the same day as
the trash. This means that there would be less
volume for their people to load into the trucks
and it would also encourage more recycling as
people do not have to keep recyclables stored for
any length of time at their home.
Page 6
