MINUTES
Parks & Recreation Commission
March 2, 2006
Addition of permanent restrooms by ball fields to replace the satellites. (The Director
indicated that running water and sewer down to this area would be very expensive. It was
suggested that the city could tap into the school's water and sewer system.)
Update ball fields by resurfacing the terrain. The fields are very bumpy and the infield areas
need to be re-cut.
Gervais Mill Park: Items identified included the following:
• Eliminate the nature study structure from existing plans for the park due to the presence of
the Watershed's building which will serve this purpose.
^ Addurg picnic tables at the above location. (The Director indicated that tables will be placed
this spring. SacketC Glaser felt that the addition of a picnic shelter would be too obtrusive.)
• Trash removal, including a rusty bed spring that was identified. (Some of the trash maybe
located on private property, but the Director will look into this issue.)
^ Buckthorn removal.
^ Boggy path in the middle of the park needs to be better managed. Some areas of path need
more attention.
• Remove dead trees (or should we leave them to add to the natural feel?)
^ Maintain natural feeling of this park.
^ Replant areas near Noel Drive entrance.
Thunder Bay Park: Items identified included the following:
Play area needs replacement. A handicapped surface is needed.
Future connection to Edgerton Street is desired.
Grading of open space due to marshy areas. (This drainage problem may get corrected
when I-694 drainage project is finished.)
Westwinds Park: Items identified included the following:
^ Correct Sumac and Willow growth through walkway.
^ Addition of small play structure south of Stoneridge Court. (This structure may not be
necessary due to its close proximity to the play structure at Thunder Bay Park.)
^ Pursue trail connection to Maplewood. Aboard walk will be needed over some wetland.
(The Director will check with Maplewood on the status of this project.)
The balance of the Comprehensive Park Plan will be discussed at a future meeting.
COMMUNITY The Director stated that the community survey results have not been received yet. The
SURVEY findings will be presented at an upcoming meeting.
OTHER Davis stated that she has met with Louise Watson from the Watershed District. The Watershed
District has formed an Education Committee and Davis stated that she would be willing to serve
as a liaison with this Committee to pass information back and forth from the Commission to the
Committee. She stated that the Committee asked about trash pick-up at the parks. They were
wondering who does the trash pick-up and how it's handled.
