Help and Hope where you live
Quality social services designed to meet the needs of our community...
serving the North End area of St. Paul, Falcon Heights, Lauderdale, Roseville,
Little Canada,Vadnais Heights and West Maplewood.
Good Evening.
Mayor Hanson and members of the council. My name is John Giovannini and I am Executive Director
of Capitol Community Services.
What is Capitol Community Services and why are we here with you this evening?
Several years ago a fund distribution volunteer from the United Way said to me that we were our own
best kept secret. We're here this evening to share the secret.
We opened our doors 47 years ago this month in the shadow of the Capitol to work with young people,
single parents, and families living on the economic edge. Today we still work with young people,
single parents and families dislocated by the changing economy. And, we have been serving people in
this community since 1984 as part of a network of services that work in cooperation with each other to
bring help and hope when things may seem hopeless.
You are stakeholders in Capitol Community Services because we share a concern for the well-being of
everyone here in Little Canada. You may think of us in connection with foodshelf collections in your
place of worship or once a year when we are collecting food and toys for the holiday distribution. But
we are here year round in several capacities.
With me this evening is Mary McKeown, our associate director and Patrice Nerad, our community
relations manager .
Mary will share with you some of what we are seeing here in the suburban communities and how we
are working to address those issues. We believe that we need to keep you informed and give you an
opportunity to share your questions and concerns with us.
In the north suburban communities of Little Canada, Roseville, Vadnais Heights, Falcon Heights and
Lauderdale, Capitol Community Services provides three main services: crisis services, counseling /case
management services and holiday assistance. The needs of these communities have changed during
the past five years especially in the crisis and counseling /case management services area.
In 1987, Capitol served 84 households in our foodshelves located in Little Canada and Roseville. In
1991, we served 588 households and the number continues to grow. Our holiday assistance services
continues to grow as well from 1,200 households in 1987 to over 1,600 households in 1991.
Principal Offices
North End Muld - Service Center
1021 Marion Street
St. Paul, MN 55117.5198
488,0507
Capitol Community Services
93 West Little Canada Road
Little Canada, MN 55117 -1339
482.8005
Branch Offices
Mt.
