Capitol Community Services
Page Two
The characteristics of these households have changed over time as well. Crisis clients today are
predominately households of:
• young single parents,
• low - income working families, and,
• recently laid off workers.
Many of our clients have not had to ask for any assistance in their life. We have found that they
exhaust all other informal support systems before they come to us for help. This action places them in
severe crisis conditions. They may be one payment away from a default on their mortgage or an
eviction notice from their landlord.
Education is a key issue for the north suburban area, for it is critical to reach these families and
individuals and tell them it is okay to ask for assistance before all their resources are depleted. Early
intervention is the key to helping families resolve their difficulties. Our counseling /case management
services assist families with their short -term crisis needs as well as helping them move through a
process to regain their self - sufficiency. This process could last as long as a year or more. This intensive
one -on -one counseling can help the family look to the future and determine how they can adjust their
lifestyle to their current financial status. Many of these families have been so overwhelmed by living in
a crisis mode that they have been unable to look to the future. Families in these situations look to
Capitol to assist them in accessing the help they need to get back on their feet.
This help generally includes:
• referral to on -site financial counseling services provided by Ramsey County Extension
Services
• assistance in finding new living arrangements
• support for regaining their parenting skills
• gaining access to employment services and work training programs
Many other issues are brought to our front door. Our licensed social workers are trained to assist and
refer people to resources that can benefit them. Some of the issues our social workers see are:
• financial problems • employment concerns
• food needs •
• need for furniture •
• transportation problems •
• housing •
• relationship difficulties
• help with income tax
• counseling services
home care
medical & legal needs
clothing
violence
Our mission is to: "help people in our communities retain or regain their ability to live independently
or successfully in a family setting." With your continued partnership we can achieve just that.
Thank you for the opportuntiy to be here with you this evening. I hope this has been helpful for you
and we look forward to coming periodically so that we can strengthen our partnership in helping our
neighbors.
Page 7
