Kirkwold,
Director and County Engineer
May 15, 1992
TO: Municipalities within Ramsey County
RE:
Administration
Land Survey
St. Peter St.
Suite 270
St. Paul
P4 /55102
98-4127
924515
fir/ CC
Placement of Durable Iron Monuments for Marking —'6
Platted Lots, Blocks and Boundaries
(M.S. 1990, Chapter 505.02, Subd. 1)
ngtneering
Operations
N. Rice St.
Shoreview
MN/55126
(612) 484 -9104
FAX 482 -5232
Minnesota Statutes, Chapter 505.02, Subdivision 1, has been
amended. Over the years the statute has required monuments to be
set upon recording of the plat. As a matter of policy, Ramsey
County has checked the monuments to ensure they have been set
prior to approval by the County Surveyor for recording of the
plat.
The amendment, a bill signed by Governor Carlson on 28 April
1992, allows up to one year after recording for the monuments to
be placed. The change is "...or will be set within one year
after recording, or sooner as specified by the approving local
•overnmental unit. A financial •uarantee ma be re.uired for the
placement of monuments."
As a municipality within Ramsey County, it will now be your
responsibility to ensure compliance with the statute
requirements. The County Surveyor will no longer field check
monuments unless an agreement can be reached between the
municipality and Ramsey County as to when the monuments will be
set and field checked, and under what time guidelines.
The amendment will take effect August 1, 1992. I again want to
emphasize, the Ramsey County Surveyor will cease his plat
monumentation field check at this time unless an agreement is
reached with the municipality prior to this date.
I would appreciate if you would send me a copy of the resolution
creating your municipality's policy on this matter. Please
no 'f-yc me of your intentions and I will proceed according to your
sponse.
vid D.
