515 Little Canada Road, Little Canada, MN 55117 -1600
(612) 484 -2177 / FAX: (612) 484 -4538
MEMORANDUM
TO: Mayor & City Council
FROM: Dave Harris, Public Works Superintendent
DATE: November 18, 1992
RE: Public Works Equipment Purchase
MAYOR
Raymond G. Hanson
COUNCIL
Beverly Scalze
Bill Biesener
Rick Collova
Jim LaValle
ADMINISTRATOR
Joel R. Hanson
The City of Little Canada has a tractor which is over 20
years old and is no longer operable. We are now left with
only the skidsteer to load our trucks with for sanding
operations in the winter. We need a piece of equipment
large enough to clean around fire hydrants, remove the snow
at the fire hall, and perform general clean -up throughout
the City.
According to last year's rental rates, we could rent
equipment at the cost of $1,150 for a 5 -day, 40 -hour week.
Also, each time we rent a piece of equipment, we have to
pay a trucking company to move it, which adds approximately
$400 -600 depending on the time it takes and the weather
conditions.
At this time, I am proposing that the City of Little Canada
purchase a small end loader which would exceed the use
capacity of the tractor. The loader would be used for
projects where it is required that we move large amounts of
dirt, asphalt, or concrete. It will also be used for
picking up and moving trees in different areas of the
parks, piling or removing snow in the cul -de -sacs, cleaning
around the fire hydrants during winter, and cleaning the
fire hall parking lot. The tractor we had needed chains on
it so that it had enough traction to pick up and move the
snow. These chains would often damage the asphalt when the
tires would spin trying to obtain traction.
Last year during snow clean -up operations, we timed how
long it took on average to clean around a hydrant using the
tractor, skidsteer and front end loader. We used ten
hydrants and averaged the time. The results were 4 1/2
Page 47
