Sample Proclamation <br />To Designate the week of February 8- 14,1993, as <br />Child Passenger Safety Awareness Week <br />WHEREAS, February 8- 14,1993, has been declared Child Passenger Safety Awareness Week, <br />WHEREAS, more children in the United States are killed and crippled in car crashes than from <br />any other cause of injury; <br />WHEREAS, when used correctly, child safety seats are 71 percent effective in preventing <br />fatalities, and 67 percent effective in preventing serious injury; <br />WHEREAS, 247 children age four and under were saved in 1991 by child passenger safety <br />restraints, and 1,793 children were saved from 1982 to 1991; <br />WHEREAS, if child safety seats were used by all children under age five, an estimated 49,000 <br />serious injuries and 455 lives would be saved each year; <br />WHEREAS, all 50 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico have enacted laws requiring <br />the use of child passenger protection systems; <br />WHEREAS, many child safety seats are misused in some ways, and correct placement and <br />harnessing is critical to ensure adequate protection; <br />WHEREAS, death and injury may be significantly reduced through greater public awareness, <br />information, education and enforcement; <br />Now, therefore, 1 (name of elected official), (title) of (name of city or county), in recognition of <br />every child's right to adequate protection when being transported in a motor vehicle, hereby <br />proclaim the week of February 8- 14,1993, as Child Passenger Safety Awareness Week and <br />encourage the community to observe the week with appropriate programs, ceremonies and <br />activities to increase awareness of the lifesaving measure of correctly using child car safety seats <br />to protect against the risk of death or injury on every ride. <br />Page 2 <br />
