PHALEN CHAIN OF LAKES WATERSHED PROJECT
TASKS AND TIMELINE
MARCH 1, 1993 -MARCH 1, 1994
PROJECT SUMMARY
The Phalen Chain of Lakes Watershed Project seeks to develop a comprehensive watershed
management plan to assess the natural resources of the watershed and their condition, provide for natural
resource protection and enhancement, guide growth, and address the cumulative impacts of urban
development on natural resources in the watershed. Participation and cooperation by public and private
interests with a stake in the watershed will be a cornerstone of the project.
The project has been funded by the McKnight Foundation for one year, from March 1, 1993 to March
1, 1994. During that time, a variety of tasks will be completed by several teams and committees, with
direction and assistance from the Project Coordinator. The following sections describe these tasks and their
products, and are summarized on the accompanying time graph. Products are identified in bold type.
I. PROJECT ORGANIZATION
Feb. -Mar., '93
The Project Coordinator, in cooperation with the Project Management Team, will:
Develop a work plan and time line for the project;
Complete budget, contracts, and other financial arrangements;
Meet with local governments, interest groups and agencies to identify membership of the Project
Teams and Committees;
Complete informational materials— project summary and brochure; and
Develop a Public Information Plan.
II. DATA GATHERING AND ANALYSIS
Mar. -June, '93
The DNR Interdisciplinary Team will gather and analyze available Department data on the natural
resources of the watershed, for presentation to the Project Technical Committee and Steering
Committee.
The Project Technical Team and Coordinator will gather and analyze historical, socioeconomic, land
use, geophysical and biotic data for the watershed that is available from management
agencies, local governments and other sources, for presentation to the Project Steering
Committee.
The results of the data gathering and analysis process will include mapped and verbal presenta-
tions that detail the natural resource conditions in the watershed at the time of settlement, and at
present. The presentations will include an analysis of how resource conditions have changed in
the watershed, factors causing change, and an assessment of current conditions and trends.
,:::Page 20
