MINUTES
Parks & Recreation Commissimr
November 2, 2006
$80,000-$90,000 due to the concrete and necessary soil con•ections. In the past, the
Commission has discussed buying portable equipment so that the site could be used for more
than just a skateboard park. The equipment would be a Level III so that the city would asswne
very little liability.
Several site locations have been discussed in the past. They include the area adjacent to the Old
Fire Hall at 440 Little Canada Road East, the hockey ririlc on Demont Avenue, and Pioneer Park
near the picnic shelter off of Desoto Street. Mans preferred the Pioneer Park location due to
accessibility and visibility. Mans also felt that "The House," a Little Canada business
specializing in skateboarding equipment, could be approached about the possibility of
sponsoring the project.
The Director asked Commissioners to put some thought into other possible site locations for the
skateboard park to be discussed at next month's meeting. He indicated that he will get more
information on skateboard park possibilities when he attends the Minnesota Parks & Recreation
Conference in a few weeks. Additionally, Sanders will resun~ect some information that was
distributed to Commissioners in the past on this project, including locations of other existing
skateboard parks around town. Commissioners could then visit some of the parks to get an idea
of what our park could look like.
OTHER These items were mentioned during the meeting:
RTJSINESS
• Commissioners were given information on "Active Living" initiatives in Ramsey County.
Active Living creates and promotes environments that make it safe and convenient for
people to be more physically active. Active Living initiatives are springing up around the
state and country to improve individual and commwrity health. Ramsey County's program
is underway uid is getting support from several elected officials and business leaders. For
more information on this project, visit Ramsey County's web site at
www.co.ramsey.nm.us/alrc. Sanders commented that there are grazris available to help
communities plan for Active Living.
• The correctional workers have been busy building a retaining wall at the Old Fire Hall. The
wall ]ooks very nice...they did a great job.
• Sanders mentioned that the connection with Maplewood's trail system will be bid this
fall/winter with construction to take place in the spring.
• Online registration has begun for winter youth activities including skating lessons, hockey
skills, winter gymnastics, and basketball clinic.
• Basketball League is about to begin. This year, we have eight teams, which is the same
number as last year.
• If all Commissioners are in attendance at next month's meeting, a picture of the group will
be taken for our web site.
