MINUTES
Parks & Recreation Commission
December 7, 2006
felt that it would take several pieces to make the project work. However, if the Commission
doesn't act now, the trail would never come into fruition.
Sanders felt that the Commission should accept the easterly portion of Outlot "B" as the park
charge for the development. He stated that the Commission should accept the land with the
hopes of developing a trail connection in the fuhire. The easterly portion is preferred for a trail
due to its higher elevation. Even though there is a chance that the additional properties needed
may not be able to be acquired, if the Commission passes on this parcel, there is definitely no
way that a trail would ever be able to be developed through this beautifully, wooded area. He
indicated that there is potential for a very nice connection, although there are hurtles to cross.
Fleisclahaclser reconaaneaaded accepting land in lieu of cash for the park charge on the
Canadian Woods development, mad indicated that the land desired is tlae easterly portion of
Outlot "B"(or tke parcel formerly known as Outlot "B") up to tlae maximum allowed by city
ordinances.
Motion seconded by Davis.
Motion carried 5 - Y. Steinert voted against.
SKATEBOARD Davis indicated that three locations have already been identified for location of a skateboard
"ARK park. They include the following:
• Old Fire Hall at A40 Little Canada Road East.
• Roseville Area Middle School (RAMS) hockey rink on Demont Avenue.
• Pioneer Park near the picnic shelter off of Desoto Street.
Davis asked if Commissioners had any other areas where a skateboard park could be located.
The Commissioners could not think of any other locations.
Fahey felt that the RAMS option should be eliminated from consideration due to a lack of
concentration of youth population in the area. Steinert agreed, stating that he felt the RAMS
location would not get much use.
Sanders felt that the Pioneer Park location would get a lot of use, but he stated that the Old Fire
Hall site would be less problematic. He stated that a skateboard park at Pioneer could detract
from the facility and is close to neighbors. A skateboard park at the Old Fire Hall could either
be located on the hockey rink or on the pleasure rink areas, although the size of the pleasure rink
may be marginal. The Director stated that the rinks at the Old Fire Hall are currently half on
city property and half on St. Paul Water Works property. He is talking to the Water Works to
make sure that a paved surface on their property would not cause problems.
Sanders stated that he would bring a proposed layout with cost estimates to the next meeting.
He mentioned that the park would not require supervision.
