c 4 2GG /GB CJGG
515 Little Canada Road, little Canada, MN 55117 -1600
(612) 484 -2177 / FAX: (612) 484 -4538
September 17, 1993
TO: Mayor Hanson and Members of the City Council
FROM: Kathy Glanzer, Administrative Assistant
RE: Deer Population Control Options
MAYOR
Raymond G. Han,on
COUNct
Beverly Scaly
Jim Lava,
Steve Morita,
Bob Pederkn
ADMINISTRgmR
Joel R. Han"
At the direction of the Council, I conducted a survey of the
surrounding cities to determine how they address control of the deer
population in their cities. Following are the results of that
survey:
Vadnais Heights - Receives only an occasional request for a bow and
arrow license. Such licenses are restricted to truck farmers and
issued to aid farmers in controlling crop damage. No plans for
further action.
Roseville - Only minor deer problems, and deer control has not been
an issue in this city.
Maplewood - Have had relatively few complaints and no control
measures in place.
Shoreview - Deer control is addressed upon receipt of a petition from
residents. If a problem is evident, the DNR is contacted. In the
past the DNR has conducted a controlled kill, but this has not
occurred in recent years.
Arden Hills - Have had no problems or complaints and no control
measures in place.
North Oaks - Deer control is discussed on an annual basis, and
various options have been used over the years. These options include
shooting, relocating deer, bringing in a sharp- shooter. No decisions
have been made on how the problem will be addressed this year.
As you can see from the survey, it appears that North Oaks is the
only City that might join in a cooperative venture for controlling
deer. For the most prompt results, uit may be best to operate on our
own if the Council determines some action on the part of the City is
appropriate.
Page 22
