Drainage area 1 is the smallest of the projects drainage areas, representing a small
portion of the south end of McMenemy Street. Runoff in this drainage area currently
channels along the edges of the street. The runoff exits the street section and flows
through the adjacent properties near 2209 McMenemy Street. The runoff eventually flows
west and discharges into the MnDOT ditch system along Highway 36. Drainage Area 1
lies within the Lake Gervais subwatershed.
• Existing Drainage Area 2 — 33.13 Acres
Drainage area 2 represents the largest drainage area within the project limits. This
drainage area covers the majority of Arkwright Street, Clark Street, Lark Avenue, Laurie
Avenue, and McMenemy Street. The runoff in this drainage area generally flows overland
and concentrates along the edges of the streets, eventually being captures by a storm
sewer system near the intersection of Lark Avenue and McMenemy Street. A ditch system
along the east side of McMenemy Street conveys runoff to this system. The existing storm
sewer system conveys runoff via underground piping to the MnDOT ditch system along
Highway 36. Drainage Area 2 lies within the Lake Gervais subwatershed.
Notable amounts of runoff pool within the street section in this drainage area, particularly
at the intersection of Arkwright Street and Laurie road as seen in Figure 4. This pooling of
water in the street section not only represents a hazard to motorists, but contributes to the
degradation of the road surface.
Intersection of Arkwright Street and Laurie Road
FIGURE 4: Photos of water pooling in street section.
• Existing Drainage Area 3 — 0.69 Acres
Drainage area 3 represents a small portion of Viking Drive and the surrounding boulevard
area. Runoff from this area flows overland and concentrates within the existing curb and
gutter section. The runoff flows to existing catch basins near 350 Viking Drive. This storm
system discharges directly into the MnDOT ditch system along Highway 36. Drainage
Area 3 lies within the Lake Gervais subwatershed.
• Existing Drainage Area 4 — 2.16 Acres
Drainage area 4 represents the eastern half of Viking Drive and the surrounding residential
properties. Runoff in this area generally flows to overland to the street section where it
11
21
