GOAL 5 <br />RESTORE AND <br />EXPAND FOREST <br />COVER AND DIVERSE <br />NATIVE VEGETATION <br />GOAL 6 <br />Restore and expand the urban forest and diversify <br />plant communities to protect water quality, enhance <br />fish and wildlife habitat, protect shorelines and wet- <br />lands, enhance energy conservation and recreation <br />opportunities, and increase natural biological diver- <br />sity throughout the watershed. <br />O Revegetate Shoreline Areas — Complete revegetation of shore- <br />line areas in selected locations with native, unmown vegetation. <br />Urban Forest Protection — Reduce the loss of forest associated <br />with new development and other activities through implementa- <br />tion of local tree conservation ordinances. <br />O Urban Forest Enhancement — Take full advantage of existing <br />local, state, federal and private resources to enhance the urban <br />forest in the watershed. <br />O Natural Community and Native Plants Restoration and Enhance- <br />ment — Restore, enhance and protect native plant communities <br />in upland woods and grassland areas as well as wetlands, and <br />increase natural diversity in plantings and community types on <br />public and private lands in the watershed. <br />INCREASE PUBLIC <br />INVOLVEMENT <br />Increase public awareness and involvement in im- <br />proving water quality and natural resources in the <br />watershed, and increase citizen understanding of the <br />effects that management of individual yards, public <br />and private lands, streets, and infrastructure have on <br />natural resource quality. <br />• Watershed Outreach and Education — Raise the awareness of <br />local officials, citizens, corporations and businesses through en- <br />vironmental education that illustrates the ways their decisions <br />and management practices affect the quality of swimming, fish- <br />ing, and other land and water resource quality in the watershed. <br />• "Model" Residential Development — work with builders and <br />developers and their professional associations to develop a <br />"model" residence or subdivision as a showcase that illustrates <br />development and yard management practices that benefit water <br />and natural resources, and helps to educate building profession- <br />als and citizens on alternatives to current practices. <br />11 <br />• Watershed Stewardship Demonstration Projects — Provide wa- <br />tershed citizens, corporate volunteers and other interested per- <br />sons with hands -on opportunities to participate in landscape man- <br />agement, restoration and monitoring activities that benefit natu- <br />ral resources in the watershed. <br />PHALEN CHAIN OF LAKES WATERSHED PROJECT <br />Page 38 <br />
