❑ Cities and the Department of Natural Resources - Forestry Divi- <br />sion should provide information and assistance to local residents <br />and organizations to enhance the urban forest and natural diver- <br />sity of plant communities in the watershed. <br />❑ The Natural Resources Board should work with local govern- <br />ments and agencies to develop strategies for wood utilization such <br />as mulch distribution to area residents. <br />NATURAL COMMUNITY RESTORATION AND <br />ENHANCEMENT <br />O The Department of Natural Resources, Ramsey County and St. <br />Paul Parks Departments, and private corporations and organiza- <br />tions should work together to identify remaining remnant native <br />plant communities in the watershed, and identify areas where <br />such communities can be restored. <br />O The DNR, Ramsey County and St. Paul Parks Departments, and <br />private corporations and organizations should complete projects <br />to restore and protect native plant communities in cooperation <br />with local citizens, schools and voluntary groups in the water- <br />shed. These projects should include interpretation and informa- <br />tion for park and trail users that explain these activities. <br />These projects should recognize the value of native upland plant <br />communities such as woodlands and prairies, as well as wetlands, <br />and promote their restoration and interpretation within the wa- <br />tershed. <br />• The Watershed District, Watershed Natural Resources Board, <br />landscape and nursery businesses, University of Minnesota Ag- <br />ricultural Extension Service and Master Gardeners should pro- <br />vide information to local residents on how to increase natural <br />diversity in plantings on private properties. Demonstration <br />projects, home tours, awards, nature center programs, etc.. should <br />be used to encourage residents to increase diversity in private <br />yards, with an emphasis on native plantings, to benefit water and <br />nongame wildlife habitat in the watershed. <br />The DNR Forestry Division and its nurseries should increase the <br />availability and diversity of native plant species available to public <br />agencies and individuals, and work with local nursery and land- <br />scape businesses to encourage a wider availability of native plant <br />materials. <br />O The Watershed Natural Resources Board, cities, and landscape <br />businesses should work with local residents to complete demon- <br />stration projects using diverse native plantings in yards in at least <br />one new subdivision and one older neighborhood in the water- <br />shed. <br />31 <br />PHALEN CHAIN OF LAKES WATERSHED PROIECT <br />Page 54 <br />
