MINUTES
PLANNING COMMISSION
APRIL 14, 1994
situation to warrant a variance.
Gaetke felt it was a hardship since without the
building addition his tenant would have to relocate.
Gaetke pointed out the taxes he pays on his building,
and the need to keep the building rented. Gaetke
indicated that adding onto the south end of the
building will result in that portion of the property
being cleaned up. Gaetke reported that an alternative
would be to move a semi - trailer onto the property to
provide cold storage for the tenant. However, Gaetke
felt that would be an eyesore.
Gaetke reported that he has done extensive remodeling
of the inside of the structure, and has plans for
improving the front of the building.
DeLonais stated that while he sympathized with Mr.
Gaetke, there was no hardship. DeLonais suggested that
there were other areas where the building could be
added onto without encroaching into the setback.
Gaetke agreed that may be possible, but pointed out the
hardship of dealing with the roof line and the loss of
trees. Gaetke also indicated that he needs to maintain
room on the site for the ingress and egress of semi
trucks. Gaetke pointed out the topography on the west
side of the building is a concern as well.
Garske suggested that another alternative would be to
purchase a portion of the Donovan property to the
north.
Gaetke did not believe there was adequate room to do
that and still maintain the setback to the Donovan
building.
DeLonais suggested that the matter be tabled and that
Mr. Gaetke consider some other alternatives.
Knudsen did not believe that the space between Gaetke's
building and the Donovan property was highly sought
after. Knudsen suggested that Gaetke expand on why it
was not practical to add onto the western side of the
building.
Keis felt the best the Commission could do at this
point would be to deny the variance request.
