Page Five
We recommend that the footings be proportioned to exert soil
contact pressures up to 1200 pounds per square foot. In our
opinion, this should allow for a suitable factor of safety against
shearing or base failure of the foundations. However, post -
construction total and differential settlements may be slightly
greater than normal and we do recommend therefore that the
structure be built to account for slightly greater than normal
post- construction settlements. A conventional approach would be to
use extra long bolts between the column pad base plates and steel
columns, particularly the more heavily loaded column pad members.
As previously mentioned, we would also recommend that the building
not include masonry construction, since that type of building is
more sensitive to post- construction settlements.
The normal maintenance program for the building should include
monitoring of the foundations for possible movement. Also, we
suggest regular monitoring of floor slab areas to check for post -
construction settlement.
PROFESSIONAL . .INEERING CONSULTANTS, INC.
--2
Leonard A.
