Awareness Seminars: Youth caught shoplifting or experimenting with chemicals or tobacco for the first time, or who are caught <br />netting negligent fires, are referred by police or court to the respective 2 -hour Awareness Seminar which is sponsored by NYFS, local Police <br />Departments and the Ramsey County Sheriff's Department. Parents must also attend with their child. Cost per hour of service is about 540.00. <br />Each case requires a minimum of 4 hours. <br />Delinquency Assessments: NYFS receives referrals from Ramsey County Juvenile Service Center's Intake Division of youth <br />referred to or petitioned to court for illegal behavior. NYFS meets with youth and their parents to assess the situation and to decide upon an <br />appropriate consequence. Cost per hour is 540.00. Each Assessment takes one hour. <br />Employment Services: There are two areas in which youth may participate in this program. Youth register for hone chore jobs <br />and pre- employment skill training through the Youth Employment Program. Area residents and senior citizens place job requests through the <br />Residential Chore or the Senior Citizen Chore Project. Youth may also be employed in NYFS' Youth Run Business, the Community Clothing <br />Connection. Here, youth receive hands -on training in marketing, customer service, retail display and merchandising, inventory control, <br />bookkeeping and computer and cash register use. Cost per hour for employment services is about 540.00. Each youth participant in the chore <br />program receives an average of 3 hours of service, while youth participants in the youth run business receive 45 hours of service. <br />Teen Pregnancy Prevention: consists of two main programs: Teen Health Center: Through the Teen Health Center, <br />reproductive health needs, both preventive and primary, of uninsured, underinsured and low income youth from our area between the ages of <br />12-23, are met. Each visit lasts approximately 1.5 hours. The average charge per visit was S80. Health Education Services: In 1993, 103 hours <br />of presentations or groups were provided to over 1,030 students (statistical information for this program is not kept by city). <br />Youth Service Learning: In partnership with Mounds View District #621 Community Education, NYFS connects elementary, <br />middle and high school students to community agencies /organizations in need of volunteers. Cost per hour is about 540.00. Each participant <br />receives an average of 4.5 hours of service. <br />Other programs and services offered through NYFS (statistics not kept by city): <br />Shoreview Community Center Youth Outreach: NYFS and the City of Shoreview provide a full -time youth Outreach <br />& Community Service Advisor at the Shoreview Community Center. By offering effective prevention and intervention programs, at -risk and <br />other youth are provided a healthy, positive experience at the Center. An event for teens called FRIDAYS has also been established. On certain <br />Fridays, the Center closes early and youth have the facilities all to themselves. Over 1,500 youth attended FRIDAYS. in 1993. <br />Reflect Respect: As a result of a growing awareness that our communities are changing in populations, and a desire to respond to these <br />changes, NYFS and a coalition of community members began the Reflect Respect Project. It's mission is to develop a community in which <br />all people are treated with respect, acceptance and sensitivity, regardless of race, gender, economic status, physical attributes, disability and <br />religion. <br />Haunted House: Students from NYFS' Youth Service Learning Project, the New Brighton Rotary and the New Brighton Chamber <br />of Commerce developed the Second Annual NYFS Haunted House. A total of 50 volunteer students from Mounds View and Irondale High <br />Schools ninth grade civic classes planned, built and acted in the Haunted House. Over 800 people attended the event. <br />Family Support Services - Home Based Family Program: This is a new program that began planning in 1993 <br />and will begin offering services in Spring of 1994. The goal of this program is to promote family unification and prevent out of home <br />placement. It will offer intensive home based treatment. In addition to therapy, this program will be able to creatively meet current concerns <br />of the family including parenting and behavior issues, academic concerns and time management problems. <br />Speakers Bureau: NYFS' staff of skilled clinicians, youth workers and educators make presentations to area churches, civic groups <br />and PTAs on topics focusing on parenting, family life, youth development and life enrichment. A speakers Bureau topic booklet and application <br />form is available upon request. Each year, NYFS staff complete between 45-60 Speakers Bureau requests. <br />Page 3 <br />
