TAKING ACTION <br />During the summer of 1994, the Watershed <br />Project partners, local residents, cities, busi- <br />nesses and others in the watershed will begin <br />to implement the watershed plan to improve <br />natural resources through a variety of projects. <br />These include the following: <br />• an innovative stormwater management <br />project in Maplewood that will infil- <br />trate stormwater within a neighborhood <br />and eliminate the need for new storm <br />sewers that would empty into lake • <br />Phalen. This neighborhood will serve <br />as a model for stormwater management <br />in other urban areas. <br />• work with the City of St. Paul and <br />District 2 Community to obtain funding <br />for the Phalen Wetland Park restoration <br />as part of the Phalen Village Small <br />Area Plan. <br />Proposed Phalen Wetland Park in St. Paul <br />• projects to restore aquatic shoreline <br />vegetation, and work with parks depart- <br />ments and landowners to manage <br />vegetation around wetlands and lakes <br />to benefit fish, wildlife, and water <br />quality. <br />• completion of a watershed -wide wet- <br />lands plan, based on the functions and <br />values of wetlands in the watershed, <br />that will help the watershed district and <br />local govemments sets priorities for <br />purchase, protection or management of <br />the wetlands. <br />• complete field work to identify the <br />remaining natural areas, prairie frag- <br />ments, and inventory open space areas <br />to assist in development of the "green <br />corridors" network for the watershed. <br />• complete restoration projects at the <br />H.B. Fuller Company Willow Lake <br />Nature Preserve to restore aquatic <br />vegetation and other natural communi- <br />ties. <br />• develop a workshop for teachers in five <br />local school districts on watershed <br />issues and identification of student <br />projects to benefit natural resources. <br />• work with neighborhood and citizen <br />groups on creative plantings and <br />projects to benefit natural resources in <br />parks and residential areas of the <br />watershed. <br />The Phalen Watershed Project Committee <br />will continue to work with local govern- <br />ments, businesses, citizens and natural <br />resources agencies to identify projects and <br />opportunities to benefit land, water, plants <br />and animals and local communities. <br />This project could not have realized without the <br />cooperation and dedication of local communities, <br />citizens, and other project partners.
