ME1Y.
To Honorable l aaor and
FROM ferry I n xdon
Il TE: N rx€bet 4, 1994
SLZBJE Diann Lane Retaining
INTRODUCTION
oanestraa.
Anderik &
Associates
ETh4k1 is 8 Pnh trtts
The Dianna Lane Retaining Walls are beginning to fail. This memo provides information
concerning improvement options.
BACKGROUND
The retaining walls are constructed of treated wood timbers. The wood is beginning to rot
and the wall is structurally failing (bowing and tipping).
The retaining wall was constructed by the developer of the adjacent property in late 1970.
The walls are physically located within the city right -of -way. The City accepted the Dianna
Lane infrastructure in 1980. It has not been definitively determined that the City accepted
the retaining walls as its maintenance responsibility. The information herein is presented
irrespective of this issue.
Council has discussed the issue on previous occasions. The information herein is provided
to assist with further Council discussions of this issue.
CORRECTIVE OPTIONS
Attached to this memo are x- section drawings which illustrate in 'but away" view the existing
and optional proposed conditions.
We suggest consideration of two corrective options as described in the following.
Option A: Remove existing wall and construct a new wall.
Details: Suggest wall replacement to be a "Keystone" type retaining wall.
Advantages: A Keystone type wall is aesthetically pleasing and will provide
a low maintenance facility with a probable life of ± 25 years or more.
Disadvantages: Cost.
Page 55
