BACKGROUND
Project Status: Council has authorized the project and set a bid date of July 5. Council
direction is to bid the street improvement with an alternate for walks / trails. The purpose
of the June 22 neighborhood meeting is to decide upon the scope and nature of the trail
/ walk improvements so the final plans can be completed and released to the bidders in time
to open the bids as scheduled.
Scope of trail / walk improvements: Council and staff have discussed various other
alternatives to improve pedestrian transportation than are suggested herein, including:
wider streets with laneways for pedestrians, alternative locations (opposite sides of the street
and differing routes), no boulevard (walk abutting curb) etc. The route alignment and trail
location suggested herein is not intended to limit the discussion of other options. However
the information herein represents what in staff's opinion is one of the most viable options
available and is offered as a starting point for discussion.
Cost Estimates: Because the scope of the proposed work is not yet well defined we have
not completed exacting and detailed cost estimates. However we have prepared rough cost
estimates that we believe are adequate for comparison of alternatives. These cost estimates
were presented previously to Council on May 25 and are presented below for reference.
COST ESTIMATE
Segment 1:
Segment 2:
Segment 3:
8' bituminous trail
5' concrete walk
6' concrete walk
$ 40,000
43,230
49,240
8' bituminous trail $ 34,200
5' concrete walk 39,140
6' concrete walk 42,275
8' bituminous trail $ 5,150
5' concrete walk 5,345
6' concrete walk 6,040
Bonestroo, Rosene, Anderlik & Assoc., Inc.
Page 47 3
