Hanson <br />Below are the results of a survey I conducted of surrounding <br />cities to determine how they address the issue of sidewalk <br />improvements. <br />Arden Hills - Brian Fitzinger <br />Have not done any sidewalk improvements nor widened any roads to <br />accommodate pedestrian traffic. <br />Falcon Heights - Susan Hoyt <br />Assessment policy says sidewalks should be assessed at 100 %. <br />Last year did some major street reconstruction projects which <br />included the reconstruction of existing sidewalks. The sidewalk <br />cost was assessed, however, each lot was given credit for <br />driveway width. The City picked up that cost. The project was a <br />large one and the City got a good rate from the contractor. <br />In areas with busy streets (Hamline and Larpentuer, for example), <br />the City paid the cost of sidewalk improvements. In new <br />developments, the developer puts in the sidewalk when required. <br />Maplewood - Dennis Peck <br />The developer pays for sidewalk improvements in commercial areas <br />as well as in new subdivisions. The City would require sidewalks <br />in new subdivisions along heavily - traveled streets. <br />There are a couple of sidewalks in residential areas where there <br />are parks in the area or the roads are busy.
