Form public- private partnerships
Rationale: While the City of Little Canada must play an active role, it cannot be solely
responsible for the success of the Development Guide. The community, both residents and
businesses, participated in creating the development guide. Achieving the Guiding Principle
of making Little Canada a good place to do business will require continued community
participation.
Actions
► Provide opportunities for public participation in the implementation of the
Development Guide. Potential opportunities for such participation include: annual
town meeting as part of on -going economic development planning, "citizen" members
of EDA, and use of other advisory boards on development issues.
• Provide public information about the on -going implementation of the Development
Guide through newsletters and other media.
► Work with organizations to promote Little Canada businesses and to identify important
issues for local businesses.
Financial Implications: Additional direct costs may result from meetings and publications.
Time Frame: On- going.
'Amend the zoning ordinance to serve as tool for implementation
Rationale: A major rethinking of commercial development patterns in this part of Little
Canada will require new zoning for this area, and reconsideration of surrounding land uses.
The commercial areas along Rice Street should be distinct along the street, forming nodes of
commercial activity at the important crossroads. To do otherwise will encourage the sprawl
of commercial development on Rice Street from STH 36 to I -694.
To keep focus on Little Canada Road as the commercial center of the community, other nodes
must be kept smaller. The ends of Rice Street at Highway 36 and Interstate 694 should have
an orientation to the larger metropolitan area, and encourage larger, more franchise oriented
development or larger scale office or corporate development.
Implementation [Draft - September 1, 1995] Page 4 ❖14
Page 95
