LITTLE CANADA
PARKS AND RECREATION
DEPARTMENT
515 Little Canada Road / Little Canada, MN 55117 -1600
Telephone: (612) 484 -2177 / Fax: 484 -4538
JIM MORELAN, Director
JACK FITZGERALD, Asst. Director
MICHELLE DeBACE, Program Coordinator
MEMORANDUM
TO: Mayor Fahey & Members of the City Council
FROM: Jim Morelan, Parks & Recreation Director
DATE: September 26, 1995
RE: Sculley Property
I have noticed the Sculley property agenda item on the Council's
September 27, 1995 meeting agenda and I would like to inform the
Council of my involvement to -date.
Bruce Anderson, Director of Parks and Recreation for the City of
Maplewood, contacted me earlier this summer regarding their need
for some park land to serve the Kohlman Overlook area. He asked
if Little Canada had identified any future park development in
that area in hopes that a cooperative park venture between Little
Canada and Maplewood could be undertaken. I informed him at that
time that Little Canada had no plans for a park in that area and
presently saw no need for one to serve our residents. I also
pointed out that the need for a park there could change to some
degree if future residential development occurred in that area of
Little Canada. In such a case, Little Canada's need for a park
in that area could increase, but it would still be much less than
Maplewood's need. That input was given to Maplewood's City
Manager on August 29, 1995, and as of that date, the Maplewood
Parks and Recreation Department was proposing a different site in
Maplewood to build the park.
As you may know, I have almost daily contact with the Maplewood
Parks and Recreation Department through Little Canada's
involvement of our youth athletic teams playing in leagues that
are run by them. If anything changes regarding plans for park
development in that area, I am confident that Bruce Anderson will
contact me.
In view of the above information and the fact that Maplewood has
not submitted a request to Little Canada regarding this subject,
I recommend that the Council take no action of any kind at this
time. Should a request of that type come before the City in the
future, we can act on it then, taking into consideration any park
needs the City may have at that time.
JM:kv
