515 Little Canada Road, Little Canada, MN 55117 -1600
(612) 484 -2177 / FAX: (612) 484 -4538
MEMORANDUM
TO: Mayor Fahey & Members of the City Council
FROM: Joel Hanson, City Administrator
DATE: July 21, 1995
RE: Traffic Control on Jackson /Old Co. Rd. C /Lakeshore
MAYOR
Michael 1. Fahey
COUNCIL
Beverly Scalze
Jim LaValle
Steve Morelan
Bob Pedersen
ADMINISTRATOR
Joel R. Hanson
As you know, the speed of traffic on the above - referenced roadway
has been a concern of that area's residents. One resident had
asked if we could stripe areas along the curb lines for bicycles.
In response to that request, I had asked the City Engineer to
look at that option as well as any other ideas that may exist
which could possibly limit the speed of traffic in that area.
The attached memo from the City Engineer is a response to that
request.
As you will note, they are recommending that we stripe the road
with double yellow lines and two it -foot driving lanes.
Hopefully, this will create the perception of a narrower roadway
thereby reducing speeds. The double yellow lines will also allow
the Sheriff's Department to issue citations for drivers who cross
the center line when it is indicated that this is the result of
excessive speeds on the corners. The Council may wish to
consider the option of placing bicycle lane stencils along the
roadway. Lastly, they are recommending that we have the road
posted as "no parking ".
It is my recommendation that we stripe the road as recommended in
the City Engineer's memo and designate this area as "no parking"
on both sides of the street. This can then be evaluated over the
winter months and re -done as necessary when the final lift of
asphalt is placed in 1996. I would not recommend placement of
the bicycle lane stencils at this time.
JRH:kpv
Enclosure
cc: Jerry Bourdon, City Engineer
Dave Harris, Public Works Superintendent
Page 80
