The new roadway surface is 32 feet wide from face of curb
to face of curb. It is acceptable to stripe the surface with two 11 foot driving lanes and two 5 foot bicycle lanes
(one on each side). We recommend a striping configuration consisting of 4 inch wide double yellow paint on the
center line and 4 inch wide white paint 5 feet from each curb face. This will allow an acceptable width for both
vehicular and bicycle traffic. The placement of bicycle lane pavement messages is optional, but not necessary.
We also recommend that "begin bicycle land" and "end bicycle lane" signs be installed at Denton and CR C..
Since the final layer of bituminous pavement will not be placed until 1996, we suggest that this striping
arrangement be completed now on a trial basis. Operation of the roadway should then be evaluated from now
until final surfacing in 1996. Any striping changes that will help achieve tha daeired oafoty moults ern be
implemented at that time.
Regardless of whether or not this section of roadway is striped with bicycle lanes, we recommend that no parking
be allowed on either side of the street.
We are of the opinion that this configuration will tend to decrease the speed of vehicular traffic through the area
and offer a safe and direct route for bicyclists.
Page 81
