Mayor & City Council Page 2
January 6, 1995
R/W Paved Pick -up
Radius Radius Turn - around?
Iona Lane 50' 33' Yes
*Burke Lane 30' 24' No
Twin Lake Trail 50' 34' Yes
* *Bryan Avenue 60' 20' No
* Temporary turn - around paved within a 60' street right -of -way
(see attached map).
** Paved area functioning as turn - around.
The Public Works Superintendent feels that a pick -up could
adequately turn around in a 30' paved radius. The five
additional feet will allow for snow storage. A dump truck
without a plow was not able to negotiate this turn without a
backup maneuver. To accommodate larger vehicles such as garbage
trucks, snow plows, school buses, etc., a 45' radius is
necessary. (It must also be kept in mind that a connecting
street does meet more of our design objectives than the cul -de-
sac option and will likely cost less assuming a 40' right -of -way
is used.)
Accommodating the turn around of a pick -up without a back up
maneuver should address 95% of the trips on any of these deadend
streets. This is why we feel it is an acceptable recommendation
given the circumstances of working within a built -up
neighborhood. It is also important to remember that the need for
additional right -of -way beyond the paved area is not as critical
in a built up area in that utilities are already in place and
house setbacks are already established.
A motion is in play on this matter. If this information affects
that action, I should know it at this time. If not, I will
proceed with the study as directed.
Mayor Fahey has also indicated he would like to discuss this
matter with the Council at our meeting on the 11th.
