V29x74 cKetznala
515 Little Canada Road, Little Canada, MN 55117 -1600
(612) 484 -2177 / FAX: (612) 484 -4538
MEMORANDUM
TO: Mayor Fahey & Members of the City Council
FROM: Joel Hanson, City Administrator
DATE: January 6, 1995
RE: Australian /Bluwood Street and Cul -De -Sac Options
MAYOR
Michael 1. Fahey
COUNCIL
Beverly Scalze
Jim LaValle
Steve Morelan
Bob Pedersen
ADMINISTRATOR
Joel R. Hanson
At the last Council meeting, the Council established January 25,
1995 for the next meeting at which this topic would be discussed.
On that date, I was to report on further cost estimates for a 45
foot radius cul -de -sac on both Australian and Bluwood. (That
study is underway.) Since December 21st, I thought about the
discussion that took place and I want to make sure that everyone
understands the proposals put forth.
Staff's suggestion was that a 30 foot paved radius cul -de -sac on
35 feet of right -of -way would meet the majority of our objectives
for deadend streets. The following chart provides a brief
summary of the comparison of right -of -way and paved areas based
on this option staff and our current subdivision standards:
Standard
Recommendation
R/W Width Paved Width
Radius Diameter Radius Diameter
60' 120' 45' 90'
35' 70' 30' 60'
While this appears to be a large reduction from our standards, it
must be kept in mind that we are working in existing areas where
the standards are not reasonable to meet. This issue will arise
in other areas of the City and could be evident in our
discussions on Viking Drive and Gilanderi Lane that will come up
on January 18th.
To further assist in evaluating this matter, I had our Public
Works Department conduct some measurements of various cul -de-
sacs /turn - arounds within the City. The results are as follows:
Page 23
