Hanson Please find enclosed an addendum to the agreement with our Building Official, Greg Schmit, which will allow him to serve as our Fire Marshal. This will fill the position that has been vacant since March of 1994. It is my view that Mr. Schmit has the experience, the technical background, and where with all to effectively perform these services for our City. I also believe that by retaining him in this capacity, we gain some efficiency within the inspection department due to his availability to our community and work in the building inspection area. The proposed fee is within our budgeted amount. If one assumes that a $20 an hour rate of pay for this service, we are being provided with approximately 5 1/2 hours of fire marshal services per week. Given the implementation of our inspection program and the other related duties, I feel this is reasonable based on the scope of services outlined. The fire inspection program is a key component to this agreement. Mr. Schmit understands its importance and is ready to begin implementation. I would anticipate that the month of May will be used to re- organize this program and inspections should commence early in June. It should also be noted that fire inspectors will be employees of the City and their use will be in the same manner as contemplated when this program was first considered. I would recommend adoption of this addendum as presented subject to any comments by the City Attorney. JRH:kpv Enclosure Page 16
