LITTLE CANADA
PARKS AND RECREATION
DEPARTMENT
515 Little Canada Road / Little Canada, MN 55117 -1600
Telephone: (612) 484 -2177 / Fax: 484-4538
May 19, 1995
JIM MORELAN, Director
JACK FITZGERALD, Asst. Director
MICHELLE DoBACE, Program Coordinator
TO: Mayor Fahey and Members of the City Council
FROM: Jim Morelan, Parks & Recreation Director
RE: Spooner Park Volleyball Court
At the suggestion of the Parks & Recreation Commission, there is
a desire to construct a sand volleyball Court in Spooner Park. A
court has existed there for many years just west of the
playground area. It consists of two poles that support a net
which can be hung by individuals using the park. The terrain of
the court area is flat, but the ground has sparse grass and is
very hard.
I have had discussion with Dave Harris, and he is willing to
commit City staff and equipment to reconstruct the site. The
work could be done this summer or early fall depending on Public
Works' work schedule.
In doing some additional checking as well as inspections of
existing sand volleyball courts, Dave and I found it would be
necessary to create a barrier between the 9 to 12 inch sand depth
and the surrounding dirt area. The most economically feasible
way to accomplish this is with landscape timbers. Cost of the
sand, timbers and other miscellaneous materials is estimated at
$2,100. This was discussed at the May 4th Parks & Recreation
Commission meeting and it was noted that there are park projects
funded for 1995 that are expected to come in well under budget.
The Commission recommended we fund the materials needed from
these excess funds.
I feel this would be a very welcome addition to our park system
and would be very well used. If you have any questions,
regarding this project, please contact me prior to the Council
meeting.
Page 100
