The local unit of government must provide a non -state cash match
equal to the amount requested for the grant.
Project Overview:
• How will the funds provided by the Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund assist in the process of
building /installing a memorial for Minnesota Veterans? — A grant from the Arts and Cultural
Heritage Fund will provide an important boost to the success of this project. The grant will be
used to help fund two (2) specific parts of the Memorial. The first part is the "Memorial
Stone ", which is the main feature of the Memorial — a polished native granite stone of
sculptural quality that is inscribed with a poem or phrase in honor of all Veterans. The second
is a "Memorial Wall ", which identifies the site in native limestone and incorporates the service
emblems.
• What will the memorial consist of? i.e. a plaque, benches, flowers, memorial wall, etc. — The
Veterans Memorial consists of the following major features:
o Memorial Stone: A specially selected, Minnesota granite stone, with natural
rough edges and a highly polished top. It will be engraved with a special quote,
poem or phrase that will be artistic and meaningful to honor all Veterans. The
site, along a new walk /trail will overlook Round Lake in a tranquil, landscaped
setting.
o Memorial Plaza: an existing plaza, that is the focal point of the streetscape along
Little Canada Road and market Place Drive, will become "Veterans Memorial
Plaza ". The existing pavers will be replaced with engraved pavers that
commemorate and honor Veterans. The names, dates and service of the Veterans
will be engraved into pavers on the plaza, paid for by family, friends and sponsors.
o Memorial Wall: A Memorial Wall of native limestone will edge the public plaza
and will be engraved with the name "Veterans Memorial Park ". The wall will also
contain the service emblems of the branches of the military. Three flagpoles will
be installed directly behind the wall.
o Walk /Trail: The City of Little Canada will extend a concrete walk /trail through the
site to connect the area and provide good accessibility to all of the Memorial
Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund
Competitive Veterans Memorial Grants FY 14 Page 2 of 18
4
