515 Little Canada Road, Little Canada, MN 55117- 1600
(651) 766 -4029 / FAX: (651) 766 -4048
www.ci.little-canada.mn.us
MEMORANDUM
TO: Mayor Blesener & Members of the City Council
FROM: Joel Hanson, City Administrator
DATE: May 9, 2014
RE: Landscaping Allowances
MAYOR
Bill Blesener
COUNCIL
Rick Montour
John Reis
Michael McGraw
Shelly Boss
ADMINISTRATOR
Joel R. Hanson
We have two project where some landscaping allowances are needed. The first is from
the Pine Tree Ponds project. Given the dramatic changes to the area, staff had told Gail
Acosta that we could accommodate some plantings for screening purposes on the
property line between her land and the development. She recently submitted her desired
plantings to the City engineer. The cost of the work is $1,360 (See quotes attached).
Based on our prior conversations and the fact that the existing pines on the property
line have a high canopy, staff would recommend we reimburse Ms. Acosta for that
amount, subject to the installation of salve. The funding for this amount would come
from the TIP district budget.
The second project involves the remaining sidewalk on Little Canada Road west of St.
John's Church. One property, as consideration for granting the easement, wanted some
additional screening given the sidewalk's close proximity to their house. This is the same
property that will require the removal of two large maple trees. That property owners
received a quote for the work and plant materials. Staff informed then that the cost was
too high, but that we were willing to purchase the plant materials and install them with
our crews. Staff estimates the costs of materials to be approximately $1,500. Therefore
we are recommending that we be authorized to expend up to that amount for plant
and fence materials for 334 Little Canada Road as additional consideration for the
needed sidewalk easement. We would also want authorization for City Staff to
install the materials. (It should be noted that the property owners have executed the
easement document based upon this understanding.)
1
