The City Administrator indicated that he has previously discussed
this with the property owner, but indicated that he would contact her
again.
Smiley reported that the Vadnais Heights Fire Department charges for
responding to freeway calls for non -city residents. These charges are
billed to the individual's insurance company, Smiley suggested that
initiating this would help defray costs. Keis asked about the financial
impact. The City Clerk reported that at the November 14, 2011 meeting
the information provided was that Vadnais Heights charges $350 per hour
for freeway responses and recovered about $6,000 in costs. It was also
reported that in billing for these costs, Vadnais Heights collects on about
70% of the costs billed. Smiley indicated that the Little Canada and
Vadnais Heights Fire Departments have an upcoming joint meeting, and
he would try to obtain updated information on this issue.
Smiley updated the Council on the Fire Departtnent's efforts to provide
emergency medical responder service, and reported that about half of
the fire fighters have been trained. He reported that Allina Medical is
corning to the Fire Station every other month and conducts medical
training. Smiley also noted that any new firefighters joining the
Department will be required to take emergency medical responder
training.
Smiley reported that the Fire Department Board of Directors has made the
decision that beginning July 1" the Department will respond to freeway
auto accidents with injuries. Smiley noted that this will not result in a big
increase in calls. He estimated that these freeway accidents number
between 25 to 30 and stated that the Department is already responding to
about half of these calls already.
The Administrator suggested that the Department put together an article
related to this service that could be included in a future City newsletter.
Bleseneā€¢ asked about more advanced medical response. Smiley indicated
that they are venturing into this area slowly. He estimated that Little
Canada has about 100 medical calls per month that Allina is responding
11
