515 Little Canada Road, Little Canada, MN 55117-1600
(651) 766-4029 / FAX: (651) 766-4048
ww w. c i.1 i t tle-ca na da. nm. u s
MEMORANDUM
TO: Mayor Blesener & Members of City Council
FROM: Bill Dircks, Public Works Superintendent
DATE: October 16, 2014
RE: Purchase of New Dump Truck
MAYOR
1301 Blesener
COUNCIL
Rick Montour
John Keis
Michael McGraw
Shelly Boss
ADMINISTRATOR
Joel R. Hanson
The Public Works department is replacing the 2000 Sterling single axle dump truck in
2015. The Sterling model truck served the City well and staff would have preferred to
get another Sterling but they are no longer in business. Staff looked at three alternate
truck chasses: International, Mack, and Western Star. All are on state contract but have
different pricing with International being the least expensive and Western Star being the
most expensive.
All of the trucks tested well but there was not enough reason to justify the Mack or
Western Star over the International. Many municipalities have been using Internationals
for many years and they have proven to be durable, well-functioning trucks. The
International has a 330 horsepower engine with 950 pounds of torque. Other notable
features are a 23,000 -pound rear axle with a 26,000 -31,000 -pound rear suspension, an
Allison six -speed automatic transmission, and a heated windshield and mirrors which will
greatly improve the operator's vision during snow events.
Along with purchasing a new truck chassis staff also needs to purchase all of the
components for the chassis including the dump box, strobe lights, plow, wing, and
sander. Staff looked at three companies for this equipment: Aspen Equipment, Crysteel
Equipment, and Towmaster. All have very similar components and pricing. In the end,
staff selected the package from Crysteel due to its close proximity (Fridley) and its
unique wing mount design that should improve the operation of the wing. The key
components purchased through Crysteel are the dump box, front plow with compression
trip edge, wing, sander, cameras on the rear of truck and looking at the outside edge of
the wing, strobe light package, and all of the in -cab controls for those components.
