MAYOR
Bill Blesener
COUNCIL
Rick Montour
John Keis
Michael McGraw
Shelly Boss
515 Little Canada Road, Little Canada, MN 55117-1600
(651) 766-4029 / FAX: (651) 766-4048 ADMINISTRATOR
www.ci.little-canada.mn.us Joel R. Hanson
MEMORANDUM
TO: Mayor Blesener and Members of the City Council
FROM: Kathy Glanzer, City Cleric
DATE: November 6, 2014
RE: Personnel Policy Amendment — Educational Reimbursement
The City's Personnel Policy provides for financial assistance to employees for continuing
education directly related to their present position, subject to the approval of the City
Administrator. "I'he Personnel Policy sets an annual maximum tuition reimbursement of $2,500
per employee, and the last increase in that amount occurred in 2009.
In setting the maximum reimbursement amount, the goal was to reimburse the employee an
amount equivalent to the tuition for two undergraduate classes. Given dramatic increases in
tuition since 2009, the cost per credit at a state college is approximately $335, or $1,005 (3 credit
class) and $1,340 (4 credit class).
It is staff's recommendation to increase the annual maximum tuition reimbursement from $2,500
to $3,500 at this time. This provides some room for future tuition increases without having to
bring the issue back to the Council for frequent adjustments.
