MINUTES
PARKS & RECREATION COMMISSION
JANUARY 8, 2015
PIONEER The Parks & Recreation Director reported that there has been an erosion
PARK POND problem in Pioneer Park in that during heavy rains the materials from the
DREDGING south ballfield warning tracks has been washing into the pond. The City
& SWALE Engineer has been working on a solution to this problem, and is
GRADING recommending that the area be regraded and a swale installed. He is also
recommending that the pond be dredged to remove the silt and ballfield
material that washed in. Initially this work was bid with some project that
the Watershed is undertaking. However, the price came in high, and the City
is now proposing to bid this project separately. It is hoped that the work will
be done this winter.
Sanders asked if the Watershed will be participating in the cost. The
Director reported that they will be advising the City on the types of plantings
for the area, but will be providing no financial assistance.
Miller asked if the work will be done before the ball season begins. The
Director hoped it would, but noted that the work will not interfere with the
use of the fields.
Maida noted that there are some areas in the park when entering from the
Centerville Road area that have standing water. The Director acknowledged
these areas and noted that the project being discussed will not address those
areas. The Parks Consultant indicated that there is a drain from the play
structure into the lawn area that likely contributes to this problem.
WARMING The Director indicated that construction of the new warming house has been
HOUSE underway for a couple of months. The exterior walls are up and the roof is
UPDATE on. The interior walls will be constructed soon, once the weather warms up
given mortar cannot be mixed in this cold weather. The Director reported
that while there are skaters using the Fire Barns rinks, skating lessons have
been moved to the Demont rink.
Maida asked what the target date is for completion of the warming house.
The Director noted that it had been hoped that the warning house would be
completed by the beginning of the skating season. However, given several
delays, and weather being the biggest issue, that did not occur.
Maida asked if a grand opening would be planned for the new facility. The
Director indicated that there has been nothing planned at this point. He
indicated that as soon as the warming house is completed, it will be opened
for use. Notices will be put on the City's web site announcing its opening.
Miller asked if the facility would be available for the skate park. The
Director indicated that the bathrooms will be available for individuals using
the skate park.
2
