Hanson
The past few years, the Canadian Days Committee has sponsored a City-wide garage sale event.
It has typically been held around the 3rd weekend of May running from Thursday through
Saturday. Last year, there were 65 participants.
Based on the time involved, Canadian Days is not going to continue this program. They have
asked if the City wants to take it over. Obviously this would place some additional burden on
staff. From a community standpoint, it is a program that has been well received and I believe it
helps focus garage sales largely to this period of time versus more individually scheduled events
that the resultant signage/parking issues.
Sue Nelson has pointed out some issues we would need to address. They are as follows:
• Select the dates: last year it was three days, May 15-17.
• Create flyer to insert in water bills.
• Place ads in the Star Tribune and Pioneer Press. We stopped submitting an article to the
Roseville Review, because many of our committee members do not receive it, including
us. (Note: the registration fees more than cover this cost.)
• Post information on the website and on cable channel 16, Craig's list, etc.
• Distribute signs. The City can have the garage sale signs that we have in stock, many of
the metal stakes are broken though. (Note: Canadian Days used to staff the distribution
of signs at City Hall. I believe we can handle this as a front counter process given we
were the ones who received the signs when they were turned back in.)
• Create a list of all of the sale addresses, items they have for sale, and the hours they will
be open. (Sue is willing to help us with this process.)
• Create a map showing all the sale locations. (The GIS system may help us make this an
easier process.)
