Hanson
Following the discussion of the technology at the new public works facility at the March
11 City Council meeting staff spoke with Mr. Terre Heiser of Roseville IT to clarify
some issues and get more information on others. A summary of the discussion follows.
Cameras:
- For the $1200 per camera price that Mr. Heiser budgeted he states that the
cameras are high quality HD cameras that provide very good detail. One can see
faces and clothing to form good descriptions. They have heaters in the lenses so
they don't get iced over in the winter and provide 360 degree coverage. Cheaper
cameras are an option as well as more expensive cameras. He feels comfortable
with the $1200 camera.
The retention policy for the camera footage is a decision the Council can make.
Roseville has a 30 -day retention policy and hasn't seen a need to keep footage any
longer. The Council could choose to go with a shorter span than 30 days as well.
There are storage requirements and anything longer than 30 days would likely
result in additional charges to the City.
- The cameras can be checked from anywhere that is connected to the network and
there is a free application that can be downloaded onto smart phones and allows
one to watch the camera footage from one's phone.
- The cameras only record if there is motion detected so there is not a constant feed
from each camera.
Fiber vs. VPN:
- As a refresher at the March 10 meeting there was a discussion regarding installing
a fiber optic line from the Little Canada Elementary School to the new public
works facility and, potentially, the fire station.
