We looked into using two options to help visually assist the council in making a decision on the lighting. Neither
will really work. Photoshop will allow us to use the actual appearance (stone, shadows, etc.) but we cannot
come up with realistic gradations of lighting, show lines/shadows/subtleties and that sort of thing. We looked
into making a model but that would not be realistic enough, but result in more of a make believe condition (like
the images we made for the PW building). It would not give council the true picture. I hope that council will be
able to use their imagination on this one.
2. The baseline info I have for this is:
a. Vanessa wanted a more continuous light across the stone as opposed to concentrated light
patterns. This would only be possible with the exposed lights as installed since the structure in the
ceiling would not work with the recessed continuous fixture idea.
b. Vanessa wanted a certain foot-candle (intensity) level. We can achieve that but note that the fixtures
now installed are dimmable. We could work with the intensity and dim as needed.
c. The engineer spec'd out the least obtrusive lights that would meet the requests noted and the
structural condition.
3. I have the following options for consideration:
a. Leave the lights as installed.
b. Leave the two long lights on either side in place and replace the center unit (the more unsightly of the
three due to the triangle effect in the stone above) with two recessed cans, dimmable.
c. Remove all three existing units and replace with 6 recessed cans, dimmable.
d. Remove all three lights. On either side of the stone, install the linear units in a vertical fashion, to wash
the walls from the side. As an option, two recessed cans can be installed at the middle location.
e. Remove the three lights and adjust the other spots which are above the council seating.
4. Attached is a photo of the chamber with the new stone wall but the old lights for reference. Any new recessed
cans (as opposed to a continuous unit) would have a stronger halo effect.
Does this all make sense?
Brenda just left but will be in later today. I will be out on Friday but, together, we will do what we need to on Tuesday
(after the holiday) with supplements or whatever.
Jeff
Jeff Oertel
President
1
