MINUTES <br />CITY COUNCIL <br />MAY 27, 2015 <br />He also pointed out the auto aid assistance that is provided between the <br />Little Canada and Vadnais Heights Fire Departments relative to freeway <br />accidents. With regard to mutual aid, the Chief reported that the <br />Department received mutual aid 4 times and provided it on 5 occasions. <br />The Chief next noted that total fire loss in Little Canada in 2014 amounted <br />to $523,750 most of which was attributable to two large fires that <br />occurred, one at 202 Ryan Drive and the other at Saxon Lanes. <br />The Chief next commented on the amount of training and drills that fire <br />fighters participated in in 2014. He also noted the additional activities <br />undertaken by the department which include fire prevention events, <br />participation at various City events, and various Fire Department <br />meetings. <br />The Chief next reviewed a breakdown of the types of calls that the <br />Department responded to in 2014, noting that just over 24% of calls were <br />for motor vehicle accidents with injuries. The City Administrator asked if <br />this percentage is up due to the fact that some of the fire fighters now have <br />First Responder training. The Chief felt that may be the case and noted <br />that in some situations the Fire Department has been able to get to <br />accident scenes with injuries faster than deputies. The Administrator <br />asked the individual fire fighters' response to First Responder training. <br />The Chief indicated that 18 fire fighters are now trained and all new fire <br />fighters are required to have this training. He indicated that there has been <br />no resistance or complaints about this training requirement. The Chief <br />also indicated that the Fire Department works well with Allina in this <br />regard. Keis asked there has been any difficulty during daytime calls to <br />have a fire fighter respond who has First Responder training. The Chief <br />indicated that there always seems to be at least one fire fighter with the <br />training responding during the day. Assistant Chief Leibel indicated that <br />Allina has been very appreciative of the Fire' Department's efforts. <br />Fischer asked if 240 calls during a year was typical. The Chief replied <br />that the average is about 225 calls per year. <br />Montour asked if the majority of accidents with injuries were on the <br />freeway. The Chief estimated about 90% are freeway accidents. Montour <br />asked about charging for freeway accident response. The Chief noted that <br />the City of Vadnais Heights does charge. The City Administrator <br />indicated that the City did an analysis of this in the past, and the result <br />seemed to be that it was a little return for a lot of time spent. The Chief <br />commented that typically insurance companies are billed for accident <br />responses. Frison indicated that the City of Vadnais Heights charges flat <br />fees for responses based on the truck that responds and the materials used. <br />Assistant Chief Morelan reviewed the 2014 Budget pointing out that the <br />Fire Department was about $4,800 under budget.
