MINUTES
CITY COUNCIL
FEBRUARY 28, 2007
PLANNING Blesener noted that there is a vacancy on the Planning Commission as a
COMMISSION result of Michael McGraw's appointment to the Council. That vacancy
VACANCY was advertised, and the City received five applications, four of which were
from individuals that applied for a vacancy on the Commission that
occurred a month or two ago.
The City Administrator reported that the Planning Commission Chair,
Vice Chair, and he have interviewed all five candidates over the past
couple of months. All applicants are well qualified and would do a good
job on the Commission. However, it is their recommendation that Chuck
Pechmann be appointed to fill the vacancy which extends through
December 31, 2008.
By ballot of the Council, Chuck Pechmann was appointed to the Planning
Commission.
ERIC Eric Weisman appeared before the Council to express concern about
WEISMAN development in Little Canada and the resulting loss of trees. Weisman
noted the Canadian Woods development, and urged the Council not to
move forward with that development or any additional developments in
the City. He also asked the Council to encourage citizens to plant more
trees and take steps to protect the environment.
Blesener noted that the Canadian Woods development has received
Preliminary Plat approval, but not Final Plat.
Keis pointed out that property owners have development rights provided
that the developments meet the City's code requirements. Blesener
agreed, and pointed out that the City can only uphold its Codes, and those
Codes to allow for development. Blesener noted that the City has a tree
preservation ordinance. He noted that the Canadian Woods property is not
heavily treed, and the City has agreed to allow the sale of a large strip of
this site to adjacent Maplewood residents who intend to preserve the
property in its natural state.
Weisman suggested that the City review its ordinances to require for the
preservation of a greater amount of trees. Weisman felt this was important
to the health of the area. The City Administrator agreed that the City can
look at this, and Keis suggested that the Council review what other cities
are doing as well.
Weisman also asked that the City take steps toward preventing people
from spraying their lawns, and encourage the use ofnon-motorized
vehicles on lakes.
Blesener thanked Weisman for his suggestions.
14
