MINUTES
Parks & Recreation Commission
May 5, 2005
Broten was concerned about allowing parking on the streets that have been striped for an on-
street trail since the general public will continue to think that it's a hail. The general public
doesn't typically have a trails map with them.
The Director felt that if parking is allowed on streets that contain on-street paths, these sections
of trail should be removed from the trails map whether the public is aware of it or not.
Broten asked if parking is allowed, are cars required to stay inside the white striped area?
Sackett Glaser commented that they can, but the width of the paved areas varies. Gray
expressed his concern that other vehicles will be forced to cross the yellow centerline in order to
pass parked cars.
Gray recommended reaffzrming the Commissiotz's position that parking not be allowed on
streets that contain on-street paths due to safety concerns.
Motion seconded by Sackett Glaser.
Motion carried 6 - 0.
Mans recommended that if the City Council decides to allow parking on Arcade Street from
I.aBore Road to County Road D as well as McMenetny Street and Viking Drive, then those
sections of the street should be either removed from the trails nzap or redesignated as
"proposed" or `future" sections of the trail system.
Motion seconded by Sackett Glaser.
Motion carried 6 - 0.
SKATEBOARD Mans stated that he has been approached by Father Fitzpatrick of St. John's Church asking
PARK about the possibility of building a skateboard park for neighborhood children. Father
Fitzpatrick indicated that there is a problem with kids skating on the sidewalks at St. John's and
he'd like to see the kids be given an alternative location.
The Commission favors the idea of a skateboard park for the kids to use. Sackett Glaser stated
that the plan is to get cost estimates on this item to discuss during budget talks later this
summer. Sanders stated that he does have some preliminary cost estimates. Mans commented
that the location needs to be discussed since the location choice could be key on avoiding
vandalism. Sackett Glaser also stated that a better determination must be reached on whether
we need blacktop or concrete for the surface of the skateboard park. This determination could
affect whether this project is feasible from a cost standpoint.
PARK TOURS Sackett Glaser stated that in previous years, the Commission has toured parks during the
summer months before their regularly scheduled meetings. She felt that the Commission could
tour the new trails this year before their meetings in June and July. Mans suggested taking a
Page 3 of 4
