MINUTES
Parks & Recreation Commission
May 5, 2005
tour outside of the city to view other skateboard parks similar to the one proposed for Little
Canada. The Commission liked this idea. Sanders suggested Shoreview's skateboard park.
DIRECTOR'S The Director reported on the following items:
REPORT
• There were three trees purchased through the Friends of the Parks & Trails tree sale program
to be donated to Little Canada's parks. Two of them were donated by Parks & Recreation
Commissioner Jim Broten and the other was donated by Jeff Croonquist of St. Paul who has
requested that it be planted in Nadeau Wildlife Park. Those trees will be picked up on
Monday to be planted shortly thereafter.
• Two days a week, a crew from the Minnesota Corrections Department has been working in
our city performing various tasks including trash pick-up along the freeways, work at Aspen
Pond to eliminate the willow problem, clean-up of gardens at City Hall and at the fire
station, ball field dragging and lining, and cleaning and painting of the pavilion at Pioneer
Park. We'll keep them busy in the parks until the seasonal, summer crew begins work.
Then, the crew from the Corrections Department will be assisting Public Works with
projects. So far, it's been a good program for us with much work being accomplished.
• The DNR stocked Gervais Mill Pond a few weeks ago with 400 crappies. Blue Gills will
also be added in a couple of weeks.
• The Arbor Day Celebration went well with Mayor Blesener speaking on behalf of the city.
The 4`h grade class from Little Canada Elementary School participated. The 4`h graders from
SC. John's could not participate this year due to the school being closed that day. Sixty Is`
graders from Little Canada School were also in attendance.
• Commissioners were given an invitation to the groundbreaking ceremony for the new
Watershed District building to be located on Noel Drive across from City Hall. The
ceremony will take place on Wednesday, May 18 at 3:30 p.m.
• The LCRA will be replacing Millennium Charity Plus in the Bingo Hall. They are in the
process of obtaining their license and are scheduled to open in September. The Director has
met with the LCRA regarding potential use of the proceeds from this venture that could
finance larger items that would benefit the youth of the community. Projects that have been
identified are a playground replacement program and a new warming house behind the Old
Fire Hall. The skateboard park project could also be included.
ADJOURN Mans recommended that the meeting be adjourned.
Motion seconded by Gray.
Motion carried 6 - 0.
There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 9:00 p.m.
Res c fully sub •tted,
s 8chma
